Introduction: Scientific knowledge is not socially distributed in a proportionate manner, it tends to favor those social groups that have access to it. Objective: To present the development of dental knowledge in relation to the epistemology of the South. Method: Essay. Results and discussion: The two central ideas of the epistemology of the South are the ecology of knowledge and intercultural translation. Eurocentric critical thinking and conventional thinking imposed on the world have determined the current status quo in current thinking and practice, the world society is in crisis, as the current contexts present a new challenge in which the Western critical tradition is confronted, where values have been lost, certain critical nouns and wanting to realize a social transformation based on maintaining what has prevailed. Conclusions: The epistemology of the South in dentistry is not a disregard for the social, cultural, economic, and scientific legacy of the countries of the North. It is not a rebellion without cause, but a search for a new way of thinking about current problems and contexts that have changed.
